It’s a Major Breakthrough – KAUST University Success Story

  • 3 min read

Imagine a breakthrough university whose leading minds build robots, map the patterns on the bodies of enormous whale sharks, discover a new kind of laser-based LED light, and explore volcanic eruptions in Iceland. Think about a campus constructed to be a “science town” – where researchers and students can live and play while they change the world with state-of-the-art research – and a campus designed to be #1 in higher education across the entire planet. This is King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) – an award-winning world leader in education and THE fastest-growing research university in the world.

KAUST is remarkable for its sheer physical size that encompasses 14 square miles, but it’s not your typical site of higher education – in 2010 the innovative architecture dominating this vast area next to the Red Sea received Platinum rating for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Across all of the facilities, KAUST focuses on conducting research under environmental sustainability and uses that mission to educate the public about sustainable development and building. Not just the infrastructure, the people are also regularly honored for their impactful achievements. The students, professors, researchers and the research centers win a variety of impact and innovation awards. Notably, in December of last year, the university received approval for $1.5M in funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Decision to Adopt a DAM

To keep the world informed about the latest research and top performances, KAUST’s Marketing and Communications team needs to access a media collection made of hundreds of thousands of photos and videos. Prior to adopting MediaValet, KAUST accessed and distributed those media assets from local PCs, which wasted hours of time as employees had to search folders one by one. Because the folders lacked organization, tagging and naming, staff often could not find what they were looking for. Head of Digital Media at KAUST, Asif Naqvi, said, “Finding an image in a library of hundreds of thousands of digital assets was like trying to find a needle in a haystack.” With MediaValet’s solution, they have one central library at the fingertips of the entire marketing team who can easily obtain photos and videos by searching keywords and tags. The team is saving huge amounts of time and has dramatically increased productivity of various departments and teams. It’s yet another breakthrough for KAUST University!
